Yep, the computer can chug merrily along short the monitor, keyboard or even mouse running.



As to what the problem can be, check that the cable from the computer to the monitor is snug and screwed surrounded by for safety. If so, I'd suspect any that cable or your video card is going. You might try to swap in another cable -- that's hastily and cheap to do. Trying another video card can get pricey. Stores don't close to to lend them out for testing.



There's also the lightheaded possibility that the monitor's connector is going. Trying another monitor might help get rid of that possibility.
