You need to reconfigure the Xserver. Open a terminal fanlight and type:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
This will start a setup program to reconfigure the xserver. One of the selections you can clear during the setup is your maximum monitor resolution. Make sure you select Yes when it asks if you want to save monitor sync ranges to the config folder.
Once the setup is complete, press Ctrl-Alt-Backspace to restart the Xserver. Log back surrounded by and you should be able to select the difficult resolution.
